Each week, South Charlotte News prep sports writer Corey Inscoe will break down the biggest south Charlotte football games and give predictions for every area contest. 

The previews are a day early since all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools home games have been moved to Thursday because of the Democratic National Convention. The day the game is scheduled to be played will be listed beside each match up.

Charlotte Country Day at Charlotte Catholic, Friday - This is always one of the area's best rivalries, but the John Cook Cup game should be even more fun this year because it's the first Patriotism Bowl, with proceeds going to fund charities that support veterans and their families. The game is sold out and there will be a Navy flyover. Keffer Stadium will be rocking. My pick: Charlotte Catholic.

Providence Day at Davidson Day, Friday - I listed this as one of my games to watch in our football preview issue and I still feel the same way. This will be a good test for the defending NCISAA Division I (Providence Day) and Division III (Davidson Day) champions. The Chargers are loaded with returners but the Patriots have QB Will Grier, who threw for 493 yards last week. My pick: Providence Day.

Independence at Vance, Thursday - This will be the first real test for two undefeated teams that are both ranked in the Observer Sweet 16 poll. No. 8 Independence coach Bill Geiler was upset with his team's tackling last week. The Patriots will need to step it up this week against No. 14 Vance and star running back Larenz Bryant. My pick: Independence.
