SWAT stand-off ends after 18 hours

                                                               Richard Howard, Jr.
PENSACOLA, Fla.- In a house on Charbar Drive in Pensacola, Fla. authorities said a standoff began Sunday between Sheriff's Deputies, SWAT team, Pensacola Police and 21-year-old Richard Howard.

The interior of the home was left ravaged when the standoff ended Monday morning, 18 hours after it began.

"Yesterday afternoon, around 1:15, we received a 911 call of a man in his underwear on the roof of a house making threats of suicide. Our deputies responded to the scene," said Deputy Matthew Baxter with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said Howard refused to get down and then ran back inside, barricading himself in the attic. Law enforcement settled in and tried to negotiate with Howard.

"Around 10:30 that night, he started firing rounds at our deputies. They used negotiations and gas, and around seven this morning he surrendered," Baxter said.

The owner of the home said he intends to file an insurance claim. Deputies said they're just glad the standoff ended with no one hurt.

"You always want a resolution that ends with everyone safe and well. He was taken to the hospital afterwards and checked. He's just now been booked into jail," said Baxter.

Howard is being charged with felony aggravated assault.
