Another season of high school football means another season of me blindly throwing darts at a board and picking every south Charlotte prep game! OK, it's a little bit more scientific than that. A little bit.

Each week, I'll give short previews for the biggest match ups and offer my pick for every game. Last year, I finished the regular season with a respectable 77-19 record. Here's hoping I improve on that number.

Providence Day at Belmont South Point - Now this is a fun season opener. Providence Day is loaded with returning players from last year's state championship team, but South Point has won 16 straight regular season games. I think Providence Day can keep this one close, but I'm not sure they can hang with the public school. My pick: South Point.

Charlotte Catholic at South Mecklenburg - This game is usually a contest to see which team can better run the Wing-T. No more. With a new coach at South Meck in Rocky White comes a new offense, one that will rely more on the pass. But is that offense ready? Catholic may have lost a solid group of seniors from last year's team, but they've still got junior back Elijah Hood. My pick: Charlotte Catholic. (I will be covering this game for the Observer. Mallard Creek vs. Butler (Memorial Stadium) - It's great to see two of the area's best play in the season opener. Mallard Creek should be very good again this year and won last year's meeting. Butler looks really, really strong this year, though, and I don't see a repeat of last season happening tonight. My pick: Butler.
