Three Union County sports teams earned AAA Scholar-Athlete awards for the N.C. High School Athletic Association spring 2012 season.

The Weddington boys’ track team, with a 3.48 team grade point average, and Marvin Ridge’s boys’ (3.35) and girls’ (3.66) lacrosse teams won the award for having the highest team GPAs in their respective sports.

A minimum of five team members constitute a team and all team members are included in the team GPA, which is based on second semester grades. A varsity team can earn Scholar-Athlete recognition by attaining a 3.1 aggregate GPA. Last year, 536 teams earned that recognition.

In addition, 10,111 athletes in the state earned individual awards by earning a 3.5 GPA for the semester in which he or she competed.
