News: Loudoun Valley's Joyce Phillips Named P.E. Teacher of the Year by State Association

(Sept. 13, 2012) - Joyce Phillips of Loudoun Valley High School has been named the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD) Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year for 2012. 
Phillips will be recognized at the VAHPERD convention, November 9th through 11th, in Roanoke. 
Sh is a graduate of Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. (She received her special education endorsement by completing graduate classes at the University of Virginia.) Phillips taught for four years in central Virginia, while coaching at Longwood College. She has been employed with Loudoun County since 1985. 
Phillips taught special education for eight years at Loudoun Valley and has been in the Physical Education Department, of which she is now chair, since 2005. Phillips retired from coaching cheerleading at Valley after 11 years and has been involved in cheer for 40 years, including cheerleading in college. 
She received the Virginia State Senate Volunteer Award for Loudoun County in 1996, the Virginia PTA Life Membership Award in 1997 and National Honor Society faculty induction in 2010. Phillips’ two children, Jimmy and Katie, are Loudoun Valley graduates. 
VAHPERD is a professional association of educators that advocate quality programs in health, physical education, recreation, dance and sport. The association seeks to facilitate the professional growth and development of its members through meaningful membership services, current research, best educational practices and legislation that will impact the profession.
