(WILMER, Ala.) Several exotic animals have been killed at the Mobile zoo over the past couple of days. The zookeeper says a pack of wild dogs is responsible.
A couple of hundred animals make their home at the Mobile Zoo. Tigers, bears, all kinds of animals, but the most dangerous may be animals that are not in these cages.
"I saw a bunch of dogs... 10 to 15 dogs... and two dead emu. And all the deer were bunched up in the corner," says John Hightower, the zoo's director.
Hightower says that pack of dogs killed all five emu living in one pen. Their feathers were caught on the wire surrounding the pen, evidence they tried to get away.
"Pretty defenseless. They could outrun the dogs if they were out in the open, but they were penned up and can't get out. But evidently, some things can get in," Hightower said.
Hightower shot two of the dogs, but he knows more are out there.
"It makes me scared to walk back here without a gun," Hightower said.
He's calling on animal control to find them before more animals are killed.
Four animal control officers were out in the area Tuesday, and they picked up some stray and unleashed dogs. The county says animal control will continue to patrol the area.
