Girls Volleyball: Defending Their Crowns! Loudoun County Wins 7th Straight Region II Title; Stone Bridge Makes It Three Northern Region Titles In a Row

(Nov. 11, 2012) - Who needs tiaras? These girls wear crowns!

The Loudoun County and Stone Bridge girls volleyball teams successfully defended their respective regional crowns Saturday night with Loudoun County taking its seventh straight Region II title with a 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 win over James Wood, and Stone Bridge making it three Northern Region titles in a row with a 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-11 win over Liberty District rival Langley.

On Saturday the Raiders won the Region II title for the 7th straight year.

Both teams will host state quarterfinals matches on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with Loudoun County facing New Kent in the AA tournament and Stone Bridge facing Albemarle in the AAA tournament.

Combined, the Raiders and Bulldogs are 51-3 on the season!


Region II Championship: Loudoun County def. James Wood, 3-1
Loudoun County dropped the first set, but came back for a 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 victory over visiting James Wood. In front a pack crowd as James Wood brought their fans, Loudoun County was able to dig deep and bring home their 7th consecutive Region II Championship. Loudoun County won their 15th consecutive match and improved to 25-1 on the season.

Over the last three years, Loudoun County has won 65 consecutive matches versus teams from Region II including the Dulles District.

The Raiders were led to victory Saturday by Maggie Phillips (11 kills, 15 digs, 20 service points, 4 aces, 1 block, 2 assists), Taylor Huewe (15 kills, 4 digs, 1 block), Jane Feddersen (10 kills, 3 blocks, 3 service points, 1 dig), Megan Fox (38 assists, 12 service points, 7 digs, 4 kills, 3 aces), Kelsey Slack (25 digs, 8 service points, 1 ace, 1 assist), Emily Solis (8 digs, 2 service points, 2 assists), Kelsey Anderson (7 service points, 6 digs), Quinn O'Connell (5 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist, 1 block), Rachel Roberts (4 blocks, 2 kills, 1 dig).

County returns to action this Tuesday as they host New Kent in the VHSL AA state quarterfinal at 7 p.m.  The Raiders are now three wins away from claiming a fifth state title in six years.

Northern Region Championship: Stone Bridge def. Langley, 3-1
Stone Bridge defeated Langley in the Northern Region Finals Saturday night in 4 sets by scores of: 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-11.  Stats for the Bulldogs: Ryan Ackermann 12 kills, 15 digs, 3 blocks; Mariah Brantley 6 digs, 1 kill, 3 aces; Megan Bryn 1 kill, 21 digs, 1 ace, 1 block; Megan Ellis 5 kills, 1 dig; Sarah Fairchild 23 digs, 1 ace; Cydney Gill 40 assists, 16 digs, 2 aces; Libby Haslett 14 kills, 4 digs, 4 blocks; Shannon Williams 14 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks.

Ryan Ackermann, Libby Haslett, and Sarah Fairchild were named to the Northern Region All-Tournament Team (Sarah was the MVP!!)

The bulldogs are 26 - 2 overall and next play in the Virginia AAA State quarterfinals on Tuesday when they host Albemarle High School (out of Charlottesville). Match time is 7 p.m.
