Charlotte Latin alumnus Paul Griggs, a true freshman kicker at Purdue, knocked through 46-yard field goal on the game's final play to give the Boilermakers a 27-24 win.
From the Indianapolis Star:
As Griggs’ kick left his right foot, the freshman stood “in disbelief” as it sailed through the uprights.
Griggs didn’t know what to do. His last game-winning kick was in eighth grade, and that was an extra point.
Griggs was mobbed afterward, including receiving a big hug from his mom, Julie, who raced out of the stands past Kinnick Stadium security personnel.
“It seemed like everybody was grabbing me and I know I got grabbed by a couple of the guys after the kick,” Griggs said. “As soon as I got away from them, I was running over toward the fans and my mom ran out of the stands and she blindsided me. She was quite happy.”
Griggs is 4-for-7 on field goals this year, with the 46-yarder as his longest this season.
