The first week of high school football is always the hardest to pick. Talking to coaches and watching practices and scrimmages only tells you so much about how good a team will be. Now, after the first week, we have a better idea.

Top performers

Elijah Hood, RB, Charlotte Catholic: Hood had a strong start to his junior season, rushing for 162 yards and three touchdowns without touching the ball in the second half.

Ross Jeffries, QB, Myers Park: Jeffries made the most of his nine passes in the Mustangs' season opener, connecting on all of them and throwing for 118 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for another touchdown.

Deron Davis, RB, Rocky River: Davis rushed for two touchdowns, Rocky River's only scores of the game, to help the Ravens win its opening game for the second year in a row.
