Quarterback Nathan Turnbow was a part of all four Ardrey Kell touchdowns as the Knights opened Southwestern 4A conference play with a 31-9 road win over rival South Mecklenburg Friday.
The win makes the Knights 4-0 this season.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” said Ardrey Kell coach Adam Hastings, adding that the win against a rival was especially important for his seniors. “I thought they got after it and really had a great game.”
Turnbow opened the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown run just three minutes into the game.
That score was quickly answered by South Meck (1-4) with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Alex Adams to CJ Thompson. The Sabres missed the extra point and trailed 7-6 with 7:40 left in the first.
Near the end of the first quarter, Turnbow threw a 21-yard screen pass to running back Quay Gilmore for a touchdown, giving the Knights a 14-6 lead.
The Ardrey Kell defense, led by linebacker Kalen Elkins, made it hard for South Meck to move the ball the rest of the game.
“Kalen’s done a great job,” said Hastings. “He’s a leader and stepped up. Really proud of him.”
South Meck’s last score of the game was a 32-yard field goal by David Lamb to cut Ardrey Kell's lead to 14-9 with 8:59 left in the second quarter.
Turnbow and receiver Reginald Woods II connected twice for touchdowns in the second quarter, first from 71 yards and then from 28 yards out. Ardrey Kell took a 28-9 lead into halftime.
“Reggie had my back,” said Turnbow. “I threw a ball that wasn’t the best and he went and got it so it’s just great to have him.”
The Ardrey Kell offensive line opened up wide holes for Turnbow and Gilmore, who finished with 189 yards rushing. Turnbow had 77 rush yards on top of 138 passing yards.
“I thought up front we played really well,” said Hastings. “We replaced four starters (from last year) and those guys have really stepped up. They’ve really worked their tails off.”
The third quarter passed without a score, even though a snap over South Meck punter Lamb’s head gave Ardrey Kell the ball four yards from the end zone midway through the period. Penalties moved the Knights back and kicker Derek Ondrof missed a 30-yard field goal.
Ondrof made up for it with 7:13 left in the game by hitting a 27-yard field goal to give Ardrey Kell a 31-9 lead.
Ardrey Kell is off to its first 4-0 start since 2008. Hastings said his team is playing well as they prepare to host Independence next week.
“I think we’re capitalizing on our opportunities,” said Hastings. “If we continue to do that I think good things will happen.”

Ardrey Kell volleyball beats rival Providence High 3-1
The Ardrey Kell volleyball team overcame a late push from Providence High to beat the rival Panthers 3-1 (25-11, 25-17, 25-27, 26-24) Tuesday at Ardrey Kell.
The win keeps the Knights at the top of the Southwestern 4A conference.
“It’s always been a big rivalry,” Ardrey Kell senior Caitlin Watkins said. “But it’s definitely not over because we play them again (at Providence in October).”
With the win, Ardrey Kell is 14-0 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. The Knights have yet to be pushed to a fifth game this season.
Ardrey Kell made the first game look easy, jumping out to a 12-3 lead and cruising to a 25-11 win.
“We needed to make a stand,” Ardrey Kell coach Zoe Bell said about her team’s strong start. “When we get ball control I’ve got hitters that can put it away.”
Providence (8-3, 5-2 SW4A) fought back in the second game, taking a 15-14 lead after three straight blocks by senior Emily Franklin. Ardrey Kell then scored five unanswered points to pull away and beat Providence 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Knights had a 7-2 lead early in the third game before Providence started working its way back. Ardrey Kell still led late at 23-19, but five-straight points by the Panthers gave Providence a 24-23 lead and game point.
“They’re a team that plays under pressure,” said Providence coach Amanda McGowan.
Ardrey Kell was able to fight off two game points but eventually fell to Providence 27-25 in the third game.
“I think we got a little passive,” Bell said about the third game. “That’s too good of a team to become passive on.”
The fourth game was also close, with the two teams never separated by more than four points. Providence had game point at 24-23 and a chance to force a fifth set, but Ardrey Kell scored three straight points, capped by a kill from senior Rachel Eppley, to win the game 26-24 and match 3-1.
“We could have played better,” said McGowan. “We should have closed out the game and went on to game five.”
Eppley had 12 kills for the Knights. Ardrey Kell was led by Watkins with 18 kills and senior Madison Wauchope had 13 kills. Junior setter Lily Duggan had 50 assists for Ardrey Kell.
Casey Rieger lead Providence with 15 kills.
Eppley credited a large and loud group of Ardrey Kell students with helping to give the Knights a true home court advantage.
“They’re the best fans we’ve had,” she said.

Ballantyne Smokies make Washington Post blog
The Ballantyne Smokies, a summer college baseball team that plays at Ardrey Kell High, made it on the Washington Post's website earlier this week.
Washington Nationals infielder Chad Tracy was the subject of the Sept. 6 installment of "Last Thing," a regular feature on the Post's D.C. Sports Bog. He's one of the owners of the Smokies and mentioned the team's website when asked the last website he visited.
The blog did a follow-up about Chad Tracy and the team Tuesday.
"We just took control over the team and made it a better atmosphere for these guys to play baseball in," Tracy told the blog.
The Smokies won the SCBL World Series in July.

South Charlotte football previews and predictions: Week 7
Each week, South Charlotte News prep sports writer Corey Inscoe breaks down the biggest south Charlotte football games and give predictions for every area contest.
Last week: 5-3
Overall: 37-11
Charlotte Latin at Charlotte Christian: It's great when the private schools finally start playing conference games, and this could be a good one. Don't be fooled by Christian's 2-3 record. The losses have come to three good out-of-state teams: Gilman (Md.), Liberty Christian (Va.) and Hammond (S.C.). Latin's four-game win streak ended at Bluefield (W. Va.) last week. My pick: Charlotte Christian.
East Rutherford at Providence Day: The Chargers have just their second home game of the year in a brand new stadium tonight. Providence Day (4-2) has to bounce back from the Porter Ridge loss. East Rutherford also comes into the game 4-2. My pick: Providence Day.
Ardrey Kell at Myers Park: Ardrey Kell (4-1) struggled in a 35-7 loss against Independence last week. The Knights will want to come back with a win against Myers Park to stay near the top of the Southwestern 4A standings. Myers Park (3-3) beat East Meck last week, but has yet to have two consecutive wins this year. My pick: Ardrey Kell.
East Mecklenburg at Butler - My pick: Butler
Providence High at Independence - My pick: Independence
South Mecklenburg at Rocky River - My pick: Rocky River
Charlotte Country Day at Woodberry Forest (Va.) - My pick: Charlotte Country Day
Providence Day football builds large first half lead, beats East Rutherford
By Corey Inscoe
cinscoe@charlotteobserver.com
Friday night was just Providence’s Day’s second game at its new stadium and field, but the Chargers looked right at home, jumping out to a big lead and beating the East Rutherford Cavaliers 42-13.
Providence Day (5-2) took advantage of East Rutherford (4-3) mistakes in the first half to build a 28-0 lead over the Cavaliers before halftime.
“We just talked about being a tough physical football team this week,” said Providence Day head coach Bruce Hardin. “I was just so pleased (with) how the players responded.”
After an opening drive punt by Providence Day, the Chargers’ Robby Rucho intercepted East Rutherford quarterback TJ Watkins’ first pass 3 yards from the end zone. Running back Gunner Guelli scored on a 3-yard run the next play to give Providence Day a 7-0 lead.
On the Chargers’ next possession, Bryon Fields returned a punt 75 yards to the end zone, but it was called back because of a block in the back. The Chargers still drove 57 yards and scored on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Chase Ferguson to Fields near the end of the first quarter.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the East Rutherford punter kicked the ball into one of his own players and the Chargers took over at the Cavaliers’ 21 yard line. Guelli (36 yards, two touchdowns) scored two plays later on another 3-yard touchdown run.
The last Charger touchdown of the half came on a 19-yard pass from Ferguson to Daniel Stack with less than a minute left in the half.
“We just didn’t come out and play good football the first half,” said East Rutherford head coach Clint Bland.
After taking the second half kickoff, the Cavaliers drove 75 yards and scored in less than three minutes on a 12-yard pass from Watkins (7-for-16 passing, 102 yards, a touchdown and interception) to Donald Wilkins.
A fumble by Guelli on Providence Day’s own 7-yard line at the beginning of the fourth quarter gave East Rutherford the ball and the Cavaliers scored three plays later on a 4-yard run by Watkins to make the score 28-13 Providence Day with 9 minutes left in the game.
Ferguson (13-for-16, 235 yards and four touchdowns) put the game away less than a minute later, hitting Fields for a 44-yard touchdown pass. Ferguson also had a 37-yard touchdown pass to Mark Brame with 4 minutes, 38 seconds left.
“They just kept putting eight or nine people there in the box and it’s just time to see what you can do deep,” said Hardin. Ferguson “made some great throws. Really proud of him.”
Providence Day opens conference play next week when the Chargers travel to Charlotte Latin.

Myers Park moving Saturday's North Meck back on campus
Myers Park athletics director Rick Lewis said the Mustangs will move Saturday's game with North Mecklenburg back to Myers Park's campus.
The game had been scheduled for Memorial Stadium.
Myers Park, West Mecklenburg and West Charlotte were forced to move some home games this year after an on-site analysis showed the schools' stadiums needed repairs to old wooden bleachers. Crews tore out large sections of bleachers at each school, vastly reducing seating capacity.
West Charlotte and West Meck moved games to Waddell; Myers Park to Memorial Stadium.
On Tuesday, West Charlotte athletics director Gerald Herbert told the Observer the remainder of his school's home games would be on campus. West Mecklenburg's John Yewcic said the remainder of the Hawks' home games would be at Waddell.
Myers Park, for now, is simply moving the North Meck game. The remainder are still scheduled for Memorial Stadium.
"When we did this," said Mecklenburg County director of athletics Sue Doran, "we said we'd take a couple weeks of the season and talk to the ADs of the schools involved, and if they felt the games would be OK at the school site, we would consider moving them back there. We had those conversations late (Tuesday) and today and determined (Myers Park-North Meck) could be played on the Myers Park campus."
Here is the revised schedule:
Friday, Sept. 14: Harding vs. West Mecklenburg at Waddell; Butler vs. Myers Park at Memorial Stadium
Friday, Sept. 21: Charlotte Catholic vs. West Mecklenburg at Waddell
Friday, Sept. 28: Ardrey Kell vs. Myers Park at Memorial Stadium
Friday, Oct. 5: Olympic vs. West Mecklenburg at Waddell
Friday, Oct. 12: South Mecklenburg vs. Myers Park at Memorial Stadium
Friday, Oct. 19: Ashbrook vs. West Mecklenburg at Waddell

Providence Day, Ardrey Kell jump into Observer Sweet 16 poll
Providence Day and Ardrey Kell join the Sweet 16 this week. Providence Day, actually, returns to the poll. The Chargers were ranked earlier in the season before a tough loss at No. 8 South Point.
Providence Day (3-1) plays a big game in two weeks at No. 3 Porter Ridge in Indian Trail. Porter Ridge coach Blair Hardin will play against his father’s team. Bruce Hardin coaches Providence Day. Providence Day plays at Liberty Christian (Va) Frday.
Porter Ridge narrowly beat the Chargers 10-7 in Charlotte last year.
Ardrey Kell held off Union County rival Weddington last week to improve to 3-0 for the season. That is the Knights’ best start since 2008. With a Southwestern 4A season-opening win against rival South Meck Friday, Ardrey Kell can set up one of the bigger games in recent school history with with Independence in two weeks.

NCHSAA suspends four Porter Ridge players for Friday's Marvin Ridge game
The N.C. High School Athletic Association has suspended four Porter Ridge High football players for Friday's rivalry game at Marvin Ridge.
Each player was a starter. One was suspended after a first half helmet-to-helmet hit in last week's 17-7 win over Providence Day. The other three were suspended for leaving the bench during an altercation on the field in the second half of last week's Providence Day game. A Providence Day player scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery. After he scored, there appeared to be an altercation of some sort between the teams.
"Based on the report we got from the officials, it was not ruled a fight," said NCHSAA deputy commissioner Que Tucker, "but because those young men did leave the bench, probably with the idea that there was a fight or skirmish of some kind, they are being ejected for one contest."
Had the game officials determined there was a fight and three players had been ejected, it would have cost Porter Ridge a potential playoff berth, per state rules. Porter Ridge, however, will have to avoid further ejections. Six in one season, Tucker said, will also cost a team its playoff privileges.
Porter Ridge (5-0) is ranked No. 3 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll. The Pirates have won 23 straight regular-season games.

South Charlotte previews and predictions: Week 6
Each week, South Charlotte News prep sports writer Corey Inscoe will break down the biggest south Charlotte football games and give predictions for every area contest.
Last week: 8-0
Overall: 32-8
Providence Day (4-1) at Porter Ridge (4-0): I love Providence Day's non conference schedule this year. The Chargers' only loss is to 3A power South Point, they beat a good Liberty Christian (Va.) team last week and have another test in undefeated Porter Ridge tonight. My pick: Providence Day.
Independence (4-1) at Ardrey Kell (4-0): Hands down the best public school game in south Charlotte so far this year. Ardrey Kell looked very strong in its game against South Meck last week. Independence has looked good at times this year, but also had a bad showing against Vance earlier this year. My pick: Ardrey Kell.
Charlotte Catholic at West Mecklenburg - My pick: Charlotte Catholic
Myers Park at East Mecklenburg - My pick: Myers Park
Rocky River at Butler - My pick: Butler
South Mecklenburg at Providence - My pick: Providence
Charlotte Country Day at Ravenscroft - My pick: Charlotte Country Day
Charlotte Latin at Bluefield (W. Va.) - My pick: Charlotte Latin

Providence Day tops NCISAA football power ranking
Providence Day School is ranked No. 1 in a power poll of N.C. Independent School Association football teams compiled by Simmons Ratings.
Charlotte Country Day is second, Charlotte Christian third, Davidson Day fourth and Charlotte Latin fifth, through week 5 games. The poll updates every Thursday.
The rankings don't split the NCISAA by Division and rates the teams factors like strength of schedule, margin of victory and win-loss record, according to the website. More recent games have more emphasis in the rankings.
The rankings are compiled by Brian Simmons, a North Carolina native who graduated from N.C. State with a degree in meteorology. He also has polls for public schools. Butler leads the 4A rankings and Charlotte Catholic is No. 5 in the 3A rankings.

Video of Charlotte Country Day's football win over Ravenscroft
Four videos from Charlotte Country Day's 41-7 win over Raleigh Ravenscroft are posted on YouTube.
The videos are uploaded by a person who seems to be the video operator for Ravenscroft.
The first clip (15 minutes long) shows the beginning of the game, including Michael Radford's long touchdown pass to Tripp Mulligan and the Buccaneers next touchdown.
The second video (15 minutes) features another long touchdown pass for Country Day, this time to Byron Smith. (It's followed by student commentary about Instagram and hashtags.) It also shows Radford's short touchdown run before halftime and continues into the third quarter.
The third video is only 23 seconds long, but the final video (11 minutes) goes to the end of the game.
