South Charlotte high school playoff update: Feb. 11

The first championships of the winter season happened late last week and over the weekend. Here's a look at how south Charlotte athletes fared.

Swimming

Charlotte Catholic girls' swimming left 3A competition on top, winning a 12th straight state championship (eighth straight 3A title) and breaking several records at the state meet in Cary Feb. 8. Catholic moves to 4A next year.

The Cougars beat second place Marvin Ridge by more than 200 points and only lost two events.

Nora McCullagh was named the Most Valuable Performer in the women’s meet, achieving All-American Automatic times in both of her individual events and setting a new all-classification record in the 50 free with a time of 22.92 seconds. She also swam on two victorious relay teams.

The Charlotte Catholic boys' finished second behind Cardinal Gibbons for the fourth year in a row.

In the 4A boys' meet Feb. 7 in Cary, Cary Green Hope snapped a streak of four straight state championships by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Hough finished second and South Mecklenburg finished third. Defending champion Providence High finished fifth.

Hough finished first in the 4A girls' meet. Providence High finished fourth.

Indoor track

Providence High won two state championships at the indoor track championships in Winston-Salem Feb. 9.

The Panthers won the girls' 4x800 meter relay (Gina Daniel, Kayla Glova, Bianca Bishop and Grace Sullivan) with a time of 9 minutes, 37.43 seconds.

Bishop also won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:15.23.

Ardrey Kell' Sydney Blue finished third in the girls' high jump and the Knights' Immanuel Henderson finished third in the boys' long jump. Henderson also finished second in the boys' triple jump.

Providence's boys' 4x800 relay (Umang Damani, Dylan Cohen, Wyatt Maxey and Daniel Kim) finished third. Maxey also finished second in the 1,000 meter run.

Myers Park's Kwame Donyinah finished third in the 300-meter dash.

Upcoming

The N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling tournament starts this week with the first and second rounds taking place Feb. 12, the third and regional rounds Feb. 14 and the state championship Feb. 16.

South Mecklenburg, Independence and Ardrey Kll will compete in the 4A dual-team tournament. Charlotte Catholic will be in the 3A tournament. For complete brackets, visit the NCHSAA website.

The NCHSAA individual wrestling regionals are Feb. 22-23 and the individual state championships are Feb. 28-March 2.

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state wrestling tournament (which determines individual and team championships) is Feb. 15-16 at Christ School in Arden.

The NCISAA 3A state swimming meet is set for Feb. 18 in Greensboro. The 1A/2A meet is the next day at the same location.
